Squad Battles WW2 LOS Question

Post by bhekking »

Hello:

I am enjoying the new and improved Squad Battles titles, and with them, Warhorse's amazing mods expanding the OOBs and scenarios for AotR, Eagle's Strike, and Red Victory. Warhorse's tweaks to the OOBs and the graphic options are really terrific, and I am grateful for all the added content and tools the mods offer.

I had a question on LOS in each of the SBWW2 mods (most recent versions, EF volumes 1 & 2 and West Front). I was playing Heavy Tanks at Rossienie in EF volume 1 SBWW2 as it's a fun, fast slugfest that I have played many times in the Advance of the Reich version. I noticed that many of my usual setups for the German AT guns were not working as they could not get LOS on the KV-1s. When using the visible hex shading, it appears that the field hexes especially were blocking LOS at much different ranges than I have seen in the stock 4.03 versions. I checked the map, scenario, and parameter files for both versions and could not find any obvious differences that would account for the LOS behavior. I've attached a couple of screen grabs below for reference. I also have similar examples from ES/SBWW2 West Front and RV/SBWW2 East Front vol.2, so it appears to be common to the mods. I am curious whether these changes are intended and how they were accomplished. They definitely make several of the stock scenarios more challenging in the SBWW2 plays.

Thanks again for the amazing mods!

I'm guessing Mike has made the fields higher than the default one metre in height...

I will have to look, David, but believe you are correct. I use a template for pdt, each scenario has a dedicated, customisable pdt file. Most fields are in fact higher, depends on season too. I will usually research growing seasons for that area and type of crop prevalent, then use that. For instance sunflowers in Russia, are very high, height of season. Hope this helps?

Thanks for pointing out the field height and the rationale! Glad to find it's intended and not a glitch.
