Gertsovka scenario

Post by Marder75mm »

I've been playing for a while panzer battles kursk, I guess I don't play very well as I found it really hard, I own eagles strike and I'm able to accomplish the victory in the scenarios I've played, but in kursk even the getting started scenario is hard, I won after several tries, but the next scenario, Gertsovka, is even harder, I've been able to capture only one objective, and I've suffered heavy casualties trying to get further... any suggestions on this scenario?

Agree! It is a tough one and the best I have managed is to end with a positive score!

So I cannot offer a solution but here are some ideas.

Minimize casualties is an obvious goal. Your on map guns are practically useless against the units on the elevated railway, even at very close ranges. So keep them out of harms way.

Use the recon unit to spot these units - save MP for two spots/turn.

Only attack the elevated railway units from the same elevation. Note there are three elevated hexes to attack from. Mix: Inf, Engr, MG. Need to defeat these units as quickly as possible. Have to take minefield casualties.

On the first turn drive an engr unit into the first minefield hex in the low wall channel. Eventually you want to have this unit as the keystone to isolate the elevated enemy units. Once isolation is achieved, resulting in Sov Morale reduction, consider moving the engineer unit back so your assaults from units on the railway embankment can dislodge the Sov units. The triangle formation will mean that one Sov group can be assaulted twice in a turn. (Triangle - with engr unit as keystone, isolated the two Sov groups - hence triangle description).

Of course, use air asset and arty. Smoke can provide some protection to non-attacking units.

I can get the 5 and 10 Victory Points regularly, occasionally another 5 but not enough for a win, so still doing something wrong!

I thought the VP might have been a ruse and the idea was to win on casualty count, but this does not seem possible.
Be nice to take out the Sov Mortar but hard to spot until late in the scenario.

Have fun with it, but it is not necessary to win every scenario. Just take the learnings and move on.
