Unternehmen Fall Gelb



May 9, 1940

18:00 Leaving Zossen by special train for Godesberg. Accompanied by Greiffenberg, Heusinger, Liss, Thiele, Nolte and the advance party.
22:15 Nordhausen: Telephone signal “Danzig”, nothing else happens.


May 10, 1940

Arrived at Felsennest, overtook marching columns, good marching discipline.

a) “Trojan Horse” did not succeeded: Nijmegen bridges destroyed!

b) Gennep Bridge undamaged.

c) Heumen Bridge in our hands

d) Roermond bridge destroyed

e) Status at Veldwezelt and Vroenhoven still uncertain.

f) XXVII. Korps report: Belgian were alerted around 03:00, Dutch apparently were taken by surprise.

g) 16. Armee reports: Border bridges were captured according to the plan. Only slight resistance. Detonations can be heard from further inland.

Maastricht, all bridges blown up. Order to 6. Armee to force crossing. Attacks against our paratroopers at the canal bridges.
Airborne landings in Festung Holland seem to proceed according to the plan.

a) XXVII. Korps report: Hatert and Neerbosch bridges taken by Gruppe Grave, according to the plane. Elements of IR 481 isolated behind the enemy line at Mill.
b) Report that Luxemburg RR station was sized. Gruppe Kleist apparently continues advance according to the plan.
c) 4. Armee advancing according to the plan. Road blocks numerous, but unmanned.

Message from Sperrle: No troop movements have been observed in Belgium, neither in northern nor eastern direction.

9.Panzer-division, secured Sint Oedenrode and AA 9 does not report any enemy movement in the Boxtel area.

30.Infanterie-Division is advancing as planned, just crossed the Kanal de Campine and sized Neerpelt.
12. Armee report:
3.Infanterie-Division keeps on moving west, Saint-Hubert taken without resistance! It’s preparing to pivot south to cover the right flank of the 2.Panzer-division

4.Armee report:
The AA 7 reached Waremme, the IR 151 must cover the left flank of the 4.Panzer-Division and the 269.Infanterie-Division must move faster to close the Belgian retreat to Liège as soon as possible!

the 1.Kavallerie-Division is preparing to attack the city of Wons while awaiting new provisions for the siege of the Kornwerderzand fort. (RR1 coming from Bolsward, RR 2 coming from Franeker)

II.AK continues to push west, 32.ID establishes a bridgehead in Forrieres.

Moot points: Why has SS-T been kept so far in rear? Kleist: Behavior of left wing of 10.Panzer-division probably due to anxieties about left flank!

Gratifying: Forward surge of Inf., in particular marching and fighting of III.AK. Sixteenth Army moving fast into line; offensive intentions against enemy forward of Maginot Line.

Unclear: Situation of 22.Luftlande-division

18. Armee report:
Aufk. Rgt. 9, Loon op Zand and Tilburg taken without enemy resistance!!!
4. Armee report:
5.Panzer-division entered the city of Ciney but there is still heavy fighting in the area against the Belgian 8th division d’infanterie.
6. Armee report:
4.Panzer-division slowed by counterattacks on the right flank (Belgian - 2th division de cavalerie) and the left flank (Belgian - 2th division de ch. Ardennais is trying to escape from the encirclement at the city of Liege).
The advanced part of the 3.Panzer-division is currently crossing the pontoon bridge in the town of Maastricht. It’s important to speed up the movement of the 3.Panzer-division to support the advance of the 4.Panzer.division and cover its right side!!!!

18. Armee report:
The 207.infanterie-division's attack is at a stalemate in the vicinity of Ede and west of the town of Bennekom.
9.Panzer-division, II./Aufk. Rgt. 9, took Breda and I./Aufk. Rgt. 9 took Oosterhout.
6. Armee report:
Behind the 4.Panzer-division, 3.Panzer-division crossed the city of Maastrich and the AlbertKanaal, the “voraus” AA3 and K3 passed the city of Tongeren!

4. Armee report:
5.Panzer-division slowed its advance to the west, due to a strong attack coming from the north in the direction of Ciney by the Belgian 8e Division d’infanterie, with the only exception of AA8 which was able to move west and take the city of Sovet.
7.Panzer-division has arrived on the Meuse River. Respectively, Pz. Rgt. 25 (Gruppe Rothenburg) with SR 7 behind it entered the city of Dinant where the bridge was blown up. To the north of the city the Pi.Btl. 627 is in position in front of the town of Bouvignies preparing to build a pontoon bridge in the next few hours. K7 is covering the right flank of Pi.Btl. 627 while AA37 is located south of the city of Dinant.

18. Armee report:
the RR1 surrounded and conquered the city of Wons. In the next few hours, the siege of fort kornwerderzand must be evaluated!
6. Armee report:
19.Infanterie-division is moving in the direction of Leopoldsburg to reach the Albertkanaal as soon as possible. A reconnaissance in force is necessary to evaluate whether to cross at Beringen or Kwaadmechelen!
Liege area, Fort de Liers and Fort de Loncin in our hands!
4.Panzer-division after a race westward across the fields arrived at the gates of Hannut without encountering resistance. The only concern is a possible reaction of the enemy from the north and south to avoid the encirclement of the city of Liège.
4. Armee report:
5.Panzer-division, neutralized the attack coming from the north heads at full speed towards the Meuse River. AA8 near Yvoir!!!
Gruppe Kleist:
2.Panzer-division unable to follow the predefined direction towards the south, stopped at Bosseval! There is an attempt by the French to neutralize this maneuver with continuous attacks on the right flank
1.Panzer-division, Illy taken by III./SR 1; St-Menges taken by K1; II./SR 1 and I./SR 1 at the gate of Floing.
SR 1 Stab and Großdeutschland Stab in Fleigneux.

16. Armee report:
XIII.AK continues the advance towards the town of Longwy and Saint Leger.
Gruppe Kleist:
Request from the XIX.AK to Gruppe Kleist to have the 29.Infanterie-division (mot) covering the left flank near the city of Florenville while awaiting coverage by the VII.AK foreseen by the Sichelsnitt plan!
18. Armee report:
Gruppe Betuwe began pushing west again, capturing Opheusden!
SS-DF is advancing very slowly on the road to Rhenen, the regiment is exhausted and needs to stop or be replaced. Apply to X.AK
IR 328 of 227.Infanterie-division began the attack on the town of Lunteren
6. Armee report:
3.Panzer-division to protect the right flank of the 4.Panzer.division went further north than expected (Aalst - Klein Gemeln Area).
4.Panzer-division, SR 33 entered the town of Hannut without enemy resistance!

AA8 managed to cross the river Meuse at Houx.
1. Armee report:
XII.AK is responsible for conducting the “Fackel operation”. The attack, in the Sarre region, is supposed to be conducted by 60.Infanterie-division (missing on the map), 75.Infanterie-division and 258.Infanterie-division. The only division able to start a “faint attack” is the 75.Infanterie-division!

18. Armee report:
the 227. Infanterie-division continues its advance west on the right flank of the 207. Infanterie-division.
IR 328 conquered Lunteren as planned.
9.Panzer-division, first elements of Aufk. Rgt. 9 crossed the Moerdijk bridge, SR 10 between Moerdijk and Zevenbergschenhoek. Gruppe Sponeck in Breda waiting to be relief by SS-V.
6. Armee report:
XXVII.AK continues its advance to the west with a pincer maneuver to isolate the city of Liège.
61. Infanterie-division, IR 151 took Fort de Hollogne without resistance
4. Armee report:
The crossing of the Meuse river by the XV.AK continues
16. Armee report:
17. Infanterie-division, IR21 entered the city of Longwy.
