Unternehmen Fall Gelb

May 9, 1940

18:00 Leaving Zossen by special train for Godesberg. Accompanied by Greiffenberg, Heusinger, Liss, Thiele, Nolte and the advance party.
22:15 Nordhausen: Telephone signal “Danzig”, nothing else happens.

May 10, 1940

Arrived at Felsennest, overtook marching columns, good marching discipline.

04:00 – 06:00

a) “Trojan Horse” did not succeeded: Nijmegen bridges destroyed!

b) Gennep Bridge undamaged.

c) Heumen Bridge in our hands

d) Roermond bridge destroyed

e) Status at Veldwezelt and Vroenhoven still uncertain.

f) XXVII. Korps report: Belgian were alerted around 03:00, Dutch apparently were taken by surprise.

g) 16. Armee reports: Border bridges were captured according to the plan. Only slight resistance. Detonations can be heard from further inland.

06:00 – 08:00

Maastricht, all bridges blown up. Order to 6. Armee to force crossing. Attacks against our paratroopers at the canal bridges.
Airborne landings in Festung Holland seem to proceed according to the plan.

08:00 – 10:00

a) XXVII. Korps report: Hatert and Neerbosch bridges taken by Gruppe Grave, according to the plane. Elements of IR 481 isolated behind the enemy line at Mill.
b) Report that Luxemburg RR station was sized. Gruppe Kleist apparently continues advance according to the plan.
c) 4. Armee advancing according to the plan. Road blocks numerous, but unmanned.

10:00 – 12:00

Message from Sperrle: No troop movements have been observed in Belgium, neither in northern nor eastern direction.

12:00 – 14:00

Situation in Holland:
Emmen, Coevorden, Hardenberg in our hands. Zutphen and Doesburg taken by LSSAH and SS-Der Führer
Report from XXVII. Korps, good progress along the Maas line, Heien and Afferden taken
Report from IX. Korps, good progress north and south of Venlo
Gruppe Kleist: 1.Panzer-division is pushing thought Martelange
16.Armee: French troops aiming north in direction of Petange - Esch

14:00 – 16:00

Fort Westervoort taken by SS-Der Führer
Röhricht instructed to ascertain whereabouts of 1. Geb. Div.
Good progress of Eighteenth Army, satisfactory progress of Sixth and Fourth Armies.
Group Kleist seems to be getting on well.
Some Belgian units along Meuse raising white flag
Meuse reported crossed south of Eben Emael
ObdH I ask him to see the Führer to get Air Force support

16:00 – 18:00

Dordrecht bridges secured
1.Panzer-division unexpected resistance at Bodange
South of Arlon, French troops move northward, threatening the Gruppe Kleist. Where is the required coverage of VII. AK? The Führer is getting nervous!
Holland: lost the control of Ockenburg airport

1.Panzer-division: Bodange taken

AG. B has contacted Kesselring requesting night air interdiction of enemy motorized movements

20:00 – 22:00

Contact the 6. Armee, why hasn't the 269. Infanterie-division crossed the Meuse at Eijsden yet?
Important: Keep pushing left wing of 6. Armee - Enemy retreating from Liege must be cut off - Get on with right wing of 4. Armee, Don’t wheel on Liege too soon

Führer (through ObdH) “II Duce reacted very warmly to news of attack - Promises intensified step up of mobilization and arms-production. Navy will move by the end of this month”.
