Do you play the "Random Battle" Campaigns in KM?

Post by GMcClellan »

In Kriegsmarine, I set up a campaign where a player could get any one of 10 different scenarios, so you would enter the battle without knowing the enemy force or even their position. It's done in the Campaign shell. Has anyone played them? This is something that can be done for the other Naval games, but I'd like to know what people think of the idea.

I think it's a good idea.
I am thinking about a future mediterranean game where, playing as Regia Marina, you will have to escort convoys without knowing what the Royal Navy will throw at you.

Yes Gary I have played them numerous times and find them a fun way to play. It adds the randomness that I like as wargamer. Putting this into other games would only go to benefit them.

As Rich mentioned this in a separate post, I wanted to say a little bit more about what a "Random Campaign" is and how it works. Honestly, "campaign" is a little bit of a misnomer. I'm using the Campaign Shell, but it's a single battle. You can play as either side, but after that advance through the campaign choice* until you get into the battle.

There are then a certain number of different scenarios, each with different force composition, visibility and the like. So, it's up to you to figure out what you're facing. Also, most of the battles use deployment boxes, so even if you've played it before, the enemy likely won't be in the exact same spot (neither will you.)

*Normally, there is only one choice, but for various reasons, ONE of the upcoming campaigns will allow you a few choices, but they're just there to add yet more randomness, and you can choose whichever you want. What does all this mean? *cue evil scientist laugh*

In short, I'm adding random campaigns to all of the NC battles that don't have them yet. "Full Campaigns" with choices and outcomes? That will take more time, especially as I'm still trying to figure out how to make some things work. That mostly won't be in the next round of updates, but later down the road. (Which won't be for a good while I expect.)

I'll probably write up a short guide on how to make these and send it to Rich for him to post as he pleases.

I think player enjoyment and appreciation will be doubled with the addition of random campaigns. Naval battles are more decisive than land battles, with a likely chance of a major defeat for the side that's outnumbered or out gunned, very aggravating. You really don't even need to have played the scenario before, all you need to do is read a lot, watch the History Channel on TV, or be somewhat versed on the subject.

I generally avoid scenarios that do not have a stronger historical context than just what if this ship(s) met this ship(s) so for me it is a simple matter of, the stronger the historical context of a randomized scenario, the more likely I am to play it.
