Campaign 1776.

Post by stormbringer3 »

I'm thinking of buying this game. Are there any plans to upgrade beyond Version 4.01? GMcClellan's post in Favorite WDS game got me interested. Any thoughts about this game would be appreciated.

It's part of my American heritage, I hope it doesn't fade away either. Hoping it gets continued support like it deserves.

I've owned 1776 for a while and enjoy playing the included scenarios as well as researching engagements, tweaking OOBs, and creating both historical and custom scenarios. I also am hopeful that all of the games in the EAW series are upgraded as I find them fun to play.

“Campaign 1776” was my first JT title, purchased via hps about 20 years ago and I still play it.. There’s a lot to like if your looking for a very detailed “tactical” level game of this period ( maybe the only one? ) , plenty of scenarios, good campaign, very good editors. The AI is decent for single player. Good multiplayer, check out Colonial Campaigns Club (CCC) for multiplay and even more download scenarios

Good luck with the game! The games main manual is thorough and worth reading. I also suggest looking at “The Beginners Guide to Campaign 1776” . Find it at the Training center of the Colonial Campaigns Club (link above). This details British and American unit types, weapons , tactics, etc. Then write us an AAR of your experience! 😀

248th anniversary of the Battle of Lexington & Concord is today. An historic moment for many of us gamers.

Watch out, here comes me again with those pesky questions about the A/I. I watched a couple of videos on Youtube that went through the scenario list and I did notice that almost none of the titles has any descriptions regarding the A/I. There are maybe 2 or 3 scenarios that have a recommendation regarding which side to play against the A/I but the rest of them just state nothing.
So what am I to expect? Are most scenarios scripted (like in Squad Battles) and that's why it isn't stated? Or are there no scripts but the A/I can handle these specific types of scenarios in this specific engine just fine, even without scripts? And what about the campaigns? Are the campaign scenarios too big for the A/I or are they mostly 10 to 30 turns long and hence manageable for our esteemed artifiical General?

P.S. I am mostly interested right now in the FIW and 1776.

Bonus question: how does the guerilla warfare (in the old sense of the word) come into play in 1776? (i.e. attacking with small units and then fall back and the victory points are more about that (inflicting casualities) than holding objectives?

Just noticed your list of questions and I'll try to answer if I can. I believe that when Campaign 1776 and FIW were written, the AI challenge concept hadn't been part of the game engineering. Many scenarios were written with scripts mimicking the historical movements for both sides. It's possible that some of the alternate version scenarios simply use the Flags and, therefore, could be considered "vs. AI" but I cannot verify that without looking at all of them using the Editor.

It's been a long time since I played a campaign for either, but, as I recall, they will include actions that can be of varying sizes.

I do not believe that guerilla warfare, as you describe it, is a consideration. You'd still get points for inflicting casualties, but, no more than what is programmed in the scenario design.
