East Prussia '14 - 1st Masurian Lakes Entente AAR - Central Powers conceded turn 38

Post by ComradeP »

After the struggle for Lodz, panther421 and I pick a battle in East Prussia. The 46 turn 1st battle around the Masurian Lakes starts with the flanking attack already underway on the 9th of September 1914.

Having defeated the bulk of 2nd Army in southern East Prussia, 8. Armee turns its attention to the 1st Army commanded by Rennenkampf. History has not been kind to Rennenkampf, but overall I'd say he performed about as well as might be expected. The battle starts 1 day after the opening hostilities on the Russian left flank. The German plan was simple: fix the regular Russian forces in the centre as 1. Armeekorps and XVII. Armeekorps rolled up the weakly held left flank.

In the end, the attack on the Russian centre didn't achieve much, but did keep several Russian divisions busy. Russian C&C collapsed due to I. Armeekorps cutting communications to Kovno north of the Rominte Heide. The (civilian) telegraph operators in several towns sabotaged their equipment at the first sign of trouble. 1st Army retreated to Kovno in disarray after losing up to 50% of its strength (estimates vary). I'm hoping to avoid that.

10th Army performed poorly against the weak German flank and even retreated to Augustow, though it faced only about 1 German division (3. RD).

The scenario doesn't feature units from 10th Army, but 3. RD does appear at Lyck. That seems like an unusual choice and it isn't explained in the notes. The notes do explain why the German forces that moved to Tilsit (off the northern edge of the map) by the 11th of September are included without withdrawing at some point: not including them would make it easier for the Russian to withdraw, off the map if necessary or to hold a line in the north.

By this time, reinforcements from the Western Front in the shape of the Garde Reservekorps (3. GD and 1. GRD), XI. Armeekorps (22. and 38. ID) and 8. KD had arrived.

1st Army has a large number of divisions manned by reservists at this point. I've added (res.) after the unit name to distinguish the D quality reservists from the C quality regulars.

The infantry battalions of Russian infantry divisions are C quality unless indicated otherwise through (res.) after the name of the division. Reserve divisions are D quality.

Russian Guard cavalry is C quality, the other cavalry is D quality. Corps Cossack sotnias are E quality.

Image

Image

53rd Infantry Division will slowly withdraw towards the east, 28th Infantry Division will move east to counter the German flanking attack.

Image

Hauptreserve Königsberg consists of a 6 battalion Landwehr brigade and a 5 battalion Ersatz brigade. Landwehr units are C quality when fighting in East Prussia to represent a determination to defend their homes/German territory.

Festung Königsberg has no on-map divisional HQ and consists of the mobile elements of the Festung Königsberg garrison. The non-Landwehr units are permanently Detached, which also means they can't recover from being Low Ammo. The Landwehr battalions have a brigade HQ.

Hauptreserve Posen consists of 9 Landwehr battalions and Ersatz/Reserve MG/(field) artillery units.

The 25th and 29th Infantry Division as well as the 1st Guard Cavalry Division will move east to counter the German flanking attack. The 56th Infantry Division will slowly withdraw towards the east.

1st Army HQ and a collection of 19th century siege artillery starts in Insterburg. The 1st Separate Cavalry Brigade is also at Insterburg.

Image

1. GRD has its Reserve brigade this time around, and it's C instead of D as well.

The infantry and artillery of 3. GD is entirely A quality.

The cavalry divisions and 27th Infantry Division will move east to counter the German flanking attack. The 30th and 40th Infantry Divisions will screen a wide front and will slowly fall back. I intend to withdraw 1-2 hexes per turn to a hex where infantry can't assault them and let the Germans walk into MG/field gun fire.

5th Rifle Brigade has 4 MG companies and will act as a backstop for the reservists of 57th Infantry Division, which will hold a wider front towards the Angerapp as it slowly falls back.

Image

Image

35. and 36. ID start with medium Fatigue from the fighting up to this point.

26th Infantry Division will move to Buddern-Benkheim and 2nd Guard Cavalry Division will move east to help out 1st Cavalry Division.

43rd Infantry Division lost a regiment to I. Armeekorps during the opening engagements on the 8th of September. One regiment retreated to the 76th Infantry Division second line instead of towards the rest of the division. The division will withdraw towards Buddern-Benkheim.

76th Infantry Division will probably lose some of the units in Kruglanken as the Germans can isolate the position on turn 1. The survivors will slowly withdraw north.

Image

1. and 2. ID are B quality. 1. KD is B quality as well.

1st Cavalry Division will try to survive until other Russian cavalry divisions can assist it. Thankfully, it is not as outmatched as the Russian cavalry at Lodz. It faces 2 brigades of 1. KD and the entire 8. KD, but the German cavalry units not at the frontline are Fixed until turn 3.

3. RD will arrive on the 11th of September, the only reinforcement for either side in the scenario.

Image

54th Infantry Division and 72nd Infantry Division will move south towards their hard-pressed fellow reservists of 76th Infantry Division.

Turn 4, 12:00 9th of September 1914.

Image

The withdrawal in the northern part of the map is proceeding in an orderly manner. As long as my units keep moving 2 hexes per turn, there's not much the Germans can do. They can fire once, but can't assault. As long as I don't leave gaps that units can move through, I should be able to decide where the Germans can go each turn.

Image

Timing the withdrawal in the Angerburg area is tricky due to the pressure from 6 German divisions. The tail end of 26th Infantry Division might not be able to cross the Angerapp at the bridge 4 hexes north of Angerburg.

The withdrawal of 43rd Infantry Division towards the north is going well, though two battalions moved towards Angerburg instead of towards the north-east. I'll ZOC-block the bridge 4 hexes north-east from Possessem for 1-2 turns to buy time for 26th Infantry Division to move east.

Most of the regiment of 76th Infantry Division in Kruglanken was lost after it became Disrupted on turn 1 and retreated the wrong way on turn 3. I was able to move 3 of the 4 battalions across two bridges towards the main body of 76th Infantry Division, but 2 battalions were assaulted and retreated across the bridge instead of towards the north. The brigade HQ was destroyed in an assault on turn 2, I hope it will reappear soon. One of the artillery battalions became Broken and did retreat the right way, as did one of the infantry battalions. As the units could all have been trapped on turn 1, this is still a good result.

Image

1st Cavalry Division ZOC-blocks two bridges and a stack is positioned at a third bridge. 1. KD might outflank this position from the south. The southern brigade will move east next turn, the northern brigade will remain in place for an additional turn (until 16:00).

Turn 9, 06:00 10th of September 1914, Normal conditions.

Image

With few units in the area, the Germans can't interfere with the redeployment of Russian units in the area. The Russian reservists should be able to keep the German units from Königsberg busy for most of the game.

Image

German units in the area are strong and massed direct fire against single battalions is costly. The losses don't decrease much as a unit loses strength, until losses drop sharply for units below 200 or so Men.

I'll have enough units in the area after the redeployment to prevent the remaining units from being flanked.

Image

Thankfully, the forest prevents moving and assaulting. The reservists of the 76th Infantry Division are otherwise under severe pressure.

Image

The delaying action by the 1st Cavalry Division is proceeding nicely, the northern bridges are ZOC-blocked and German cavalry is on the western bank of the river.

The F on the river hexside stands for Ford, not Ferry.

Turn 12, 12:00 10th of September 1914.

Image

The 53rd Infantry Division has disengaged.

The 56th Infantry Division continues its own little war with the units from Königsberg.

Image

The redeployment continues without much difficulty. The situation would be a lot worse if the Germans had more offensive mobility, but they don't as this is 1914.

Image

The 43rd Infantry Division faces most of XVII. Armeekorps as it withdraws.

Most of the 26th Infantry Division was able to move across the Angerapp before the Germans moved to the bridges, but two battalions still on the other side will have to take the scenic route through Darkehmen.

The reservists of the 72nd Infantry Division will cover the flank of the cavalry divisions moving into the area.

The 2nd Guard Cavalry Division is now in place to support the 1st Cavalry Division, the 3rd Cavalry Division is moving in from the north as well.

Image

Pressure from the German cavalry is limited thus far, but I'll have to keep withdrawing for now due to the arrival of the 3. RD on the 11th.

My losses are acceptable thus far, mostly reservists. As my reservist losses are cheap in terms of VP's, the points gained from Russians casualties are fairly low.

Turn 17, 06:00 11th of September 1914, Normal conditions.

Image

The 56th Infantry Division is split up to cover more ground, so holding ground is not an option. Norkitten will fall soon. I intend to hold Gumbinnen by the end of the game, everything west of it is up for grabs.

Image

III Army Corps and half of XX Army Corps are converging on Darkehmen. The other half, 29th Infantry Division is already approaching Goldap together with the reservists of 54th Infantry Division.

Rennenkampf is near Vikishken. The 4 reservist divisions in this part of the map don't have a Corps HQ so the divisional HQ's would be Detached without the 1st Army HQ nearby.

Image

The river crossing at Benkheim is difficult with all the Germans around, but the timing worked.

The 76th Infantry Division is temporarily split in two parts, the brigade still near the forest will move towards Goldap, before crossing the Goldap river at the bridge north of the "Goldap" river label.

Resistance in the area will soon stiffen substantially, as I. Armeekorps will eventually face 3 regular infantry divisions and 1 reservist division. 1. KD and 8. KD will face 4 cavalry divisions and a separate cavalry brigade.

The 72nd Infantry Division will split, with one brigade heading east to secure Suwalki and the other brigade assisting 1st Cavalry Division.

Turn 20, 12:00 11th of September 1914.

Image

The 53rd Infantry Division continues to enjoy the nice summer weather, as the 56th Infantry Division slowly falls back towards Insterburg. As most of the German infantry units in the area either have a soft attack value of 1 (Landwehr) or an effective SA value of 1 due to being permanently Low Ammo after failing a supply check (Festung Königsberg Ersatz units), direct fire losses are not that high.

Image

I decided to keep 27th Infantry Division on the western bank of the Angerapp to assist 57th Infantry Division for now. The 25th Infantry Division will move south of Darkehmen to protect the flank of the 43rd Infantry Division as it moves towards Goldap.

Image

Most of the defensive line consists of cavalry at the moment, which will pull back in the face of German infantry, but the line is otherwise solidifying.

The 6 1st Army artillery units, 5 vintage French 19th century siege artillery units and 1 mixed modern howitzer unit will deploy south of Goldap.

The 2nd Cavalry Division has isolated 3 German cavalry squadrons from 8. KD at the ford west of Gollubien.

Image

The Cossack screen doesn't spot any German cavalry units, so it looks like I'm not being flanked from the south.

Turn 25, 06:00 12th of September 1914, Normal conditions.

My opponent changed tactics and pushed some infantry forwards at night, which forced me to respond. Unfortunately, some units were caught in a difficult spot by the unexpected new tactic and 3 MG units were mauled. In the end, serious problems were prevented. I'll need to take more aggressive night turns into account from now on.

Image

53rd Infantry Division picks flowers, it's having a lovely war thus far.

A stack from 56th Infantry Division was bumped out of its hex and will only be able to disengage with difficulty. The two brigade MG units suffered.

Image

IV Army Corps is taking stiff losses, but manages to keep the best German units at bay thus far.

1st Rifle Brigade is screening a wide front. The frontline narrowing will help it.

57th Infantry Division is still in reasonable shape, surprisingly.

An MG unit from 27th Infantry Division was Disrupted as it switched to T-mode and was nearly destroyed by an assault. If the game selects the MG unit to absorb the assault losses, the result tends to be (near) instant destruction in FWWC.

Image

XVII. Armeekorps keeps pushing the Russian units in front of it, but it still has a river to cross before it reaches Goldap, which is also across the river from the direction of their advance.

The typical German problem in WWI and WWII. Russian units might not be very capable individually but there are a LOT of Russians. The I. Armeekorps advance grinds to a halt.

Image

German cavalry is moving north, 3. RD takes up defensive positions. 1st Guard Cavalry Division will move south to see if the German flank can be turned.

Turn 28, 12:00 12th of September 1914.

Image

53rd Infantry Division is taking a pleasant stroll through the vast fields of East Prussia.

56th Infantry Division approaches Insterburg. It will probably cross the river there and head for the Zulkiner Forest.

Image

The straightening frontline is starting to make moving into contact more costly for the Germans, but my units are thoroughly outclassed so they won't be making a stand.

Image

26th and 29th Infantry Division are slowly wearing down 2. ID. The Germans receive minimal replacements, and Recovery is 0% for both sides.

54th Infantry Division assaults 1. ID. The casualty ratio is not always in my favour, but it's better than sitting in place and be shot to pieces. The point ratio is in my favour, due to the difference in points between D and B quality units.

The Russian units south of Goldap are starting to push back. The cavalry divisions in the area charge forwards and would destroy 2 cavalry squadrons, a brigade HQ, an MG unit and a field gun unit. Not bad.

Image

I don't expect to deal serious damage to 3. RD with two cavalry divisions, but threatening the German flank will prevent the division from advancing or moving to another sector.

Turn 33, 06:00 13th of September 1914, Normal conditions.

Disrupted units highlighted, I had around 90 Disrupted units at the start of the turn.

The night time probing hurts cohesion in the north, as I have to respond by pulling back in areas where German units can move to the front in T-mode along a road. The number of Disrupted units doubled in the last two days.

D quality reservists are less shaky now, but do take a long time to recover, particularly when also Low Ammo (effective F Morale). That feels right, but I still think they're a bit too sturdy.

Image

40th and 56th Infantry Division slip across the river north of Insterburg. 40th Infantry Division will march towards Gumbinnen along the primary road. 56th Infantry Division will slowly fall back to the woods, while a brigade maintains contact with 53rd Infantry Division north of it.

Image

30th Infantry Division found itself in an awkward position, facing the A quality 3. GD, and retreated a bit during the night. The divisional and brigade HQ's are Disrupted. IV Army Corps HQ is also Disrupted.

Regardless, the retreat to the Angerapp is proceeding as planned. There are several crossing options and the Germans won't be able to catch any units on the other bank besides a Cossack sotnia or two.

41. ID is crossing the Angerapp at Darkehmen. The two battalions would be Disrupted and destroyed by 25th Infantry Division after retreating the wrong way, towards my MG's (which have no ZOC) instead of back across the river.

Image

26th Infantry Division will pull back slightly to face any German units crossing the Goldap river at the medium bridge.

I was surprised 54th Infantry Division was still in the fight. The reservists are holding up quite well, though the Disruptions are starting to add up, with 6 battalions or so in Disrupted state. It helps that most of 1. ID is a few kilometres to the east and most of 2. ID is busy fending off assaults by 26th and 29th Infantry Divisions.

28th Infantry Division used the elevation differences due to the rolling hills to stay out of LOS and will attack the flank of I. Armeekorps and 8. KD together with the cavalry divisions in the area.

Image

1st Guard Cavalry Division hasn't spotted any German units yet. It will move to the primary road north of Lyck.

A cavalry brigade from 1st Cavalry Division is moving south to cover the flank.
