In the manual it indicates that whether you fire individual units or combine them for one fire the casualties the enemy unit will suffer will not be that much different.
However I am wondering about fatigue since this increases when a unit takes fire. In our PBEM game I had 8 artillery units in range of a single Reb infantry unit in column. I fired the artillery individually thinking that although the casualties may not be that much different maybe each shot increases the fatigue level of the target unit. In other words, would the fatigue level of the target unit be increased more by firing each artillery unit individually or combining all them for one shot?

Did some testing using the day 2 scenario and you can inflict a lot more fatigue on targeted units by firing your units individually.
Re: Fatigue from Fire
I think fatigue is based on the number of casualties so I guess if you fire once and it generates a certain loss then you are rolling once (low to high range) to see how much fatigue is gained based on that loss.
If you opt for multiple firing then you're gambling on rolling higher over the course of all your rolls rather than just one roll.
As a non gambler and someone that likes to reduce game time to a minimum to reduce wear and tear on wrists, I usually fire with everything.....but yes I think individual firing does give better results.

On average over lots of rolls it should be the same.
