Rommel's First Offensive - solo AAR

Post by zovs »

Going to try to do a quick AAR using Strategic War's War on the Southern Front scenario #230: Rommel's First Offensive.

Per the scenario description:

Start: 24th Mar 1941
End: 25th Apr 1941
Turns: 17

North Africa, March 24th 1941: Rommel had arrived in Tripoli mid February, by mid March he assessed that the British were not going to attack, indeed they were using troops from North Africa to bolster the defence of Greece. Accordingly, he attacked using 5th Light Division with two Italian divisions. Meeting little opposition they swiftly moved east along three axes of advance, arriving piecemeal at Tobruk on April 10th. The British had reinforced Tobruk with the 7th Australian Division which grimly held the port. Rommel bypassed Tobruk and finally ran out of steam after taking the Halfaya Pass at Buq-Buq on April 25th.

NOTE: there is a typo here: the defence of Greece. Should be: the defense of Greece.

Here is the start of turn 1:

Zooming in a bit:

And the main coastal objectives:

The 5th Light leads the way;

Bumping into unknown British armor unit:

Used two Stuka attacks on the British and bringing up the rest of my small force:

Going to end the turn there, don't have enough MP to attack with good odds.

But also heading out for the weekend.

Turn 2

I used two Stuka attacks on the British, and then assaulted the hex with everyone and got this result which destroyed the artillery units but its slowing me down.
Image

The second attack by just the 5th Light did the job!

End of turn 3 positions.

Turn 5

Mud!

End of turn 5, note I did bomb Benghazi with three Stuka's (two of which were Italian) and the Italian bombers (BR.20) and you can see my supply line.

Turn 6

First attack on Benghazi leaves just the mobile supply unit there in defense, but the Italians don't have enough MP to attack again:

Bumped into some NZ unit I think and hit it with Stuka's.
Image

Yes its either a NZ or an Aussie unit.

Now that depends on whether you're British or American ;)

(looks fine to me by the way 8-))
