When compared to it's closest contemporary -the Leopard I - the French AMX-30B2 has roughly half the firepower but double the range.

Is this correct?

Going by the McNamara numbers we have, yes, though please note the Leopard 1A5 that is closer in date to the AMX-30B2 has the same range of two.
