Armor calculation

Post by Jules Verne »

Work is progressing on my Ukraine mod, but I could use some help! What kind of factors go into the armor value of vehicles? It makes sense for vehicles with 1-20 armor value, which matches the average mm armor value of front, side and rear hull of given vehicles. But why does a M60 Patton have 72 armor? What am I missing?

I use a calculation where I take front hull armor, run it into a a slope program where you enter the thickness and slope to get an effective armor value. Do the same for front turret, add both values divide by two for an average, then divide by 150% to get the front. Do same for side hull/turret. Program uses side armor value at 100%, then multiplies by 150% for front facing, by 25% for rear. Compare to see if the figure you come up for the front is too much of what you get for the side multiplied by 150%. Armor I use a calculation of penetration at 500meters @30° ,if only the vertical is given, divide by 1.22. hope this helps, works well in my mods, trying to make it a go for official releases.

Thanks Warhorse for the response. I'm going to give an example:

The M60A3 Patton has 75mm hull side armor and roughly 140mm turret side armor. Average comes out to 108mm

108 * 1,5 = 162 front armor value
108 * 0,75 = 81 rear armor value

Actual front armor value for the M60A3 Patton:

230mm front hull armor and 254 front turret armor. Average is 242.

In this instance, 108 would be correct?

Yes, that would be correct.
